#Blackteachersmatter

The Fundisha Center Inc. is proud to join the movement to build the Black teacher pipeline. The country is currently experiencing a teacher shortage.  The impact of this problem is especially acute in urban areas and therefore has a profound impact on Black students. While 51% of public-school students are children of color, eight out of ten teachers are white and seven out of ten are female. Research has shown that access to a racially and culturally diverse teacher workforce is beneficial to all students, particularly for students of color. According to a 2017 study, researchers from Johns Hopkins University, American University and the University of California Davis, found that having at least one Black teacher in elementary school cuts the high school dropout rates of low-income  Black boys by 39% and raises college aspirations among poor students of both sexes by 19%.  Research has shown that Black teachers have higher expectations for Black students; are less likely to issue disciplinary actions to Black students; and are more likely to recommend Black students for advanced coursework. Overall Black students have better test scores and more positive views about school when they have Black teachers who serve as reliable role models and mentors.   The problem is nationwide Black teachers make up less than 7% of all teachers and Black men account for only 2% of educators working in K-12 schools.  These dire statistics make it highly unlikely that most Black students will have the benefit of being taught by a Black educator during the course of their educational career.  Join the growing movement of Black men entering teaching .

Teacher 2 Teacher Brother 2 Brother Mentorship & Coaching

The Fundisha Center Inc. is seeking experienced Black Male teachers or administrators  to serve as mentors and coaches to Teach Brother Teach! fellows for the 2024 cohort

Mentors Needed

Black men going into the field of education can often feel isolated and misunderstood due to the limited number of males in the profession. It is extremely important that young teachers are supported by experienced professionals to be successful in the field and have opportunities to interact with individuals who understand the unique challenges that Black men face in the field of education.

The purpose of the Teacher to Teacher/Brother to Brother program is to develop a cadre of experienced and successful Black male educators to serve as mentors and coaches for the Teach Brother Teach! Fellows.  The program provides a formal platform to facilitate positive interactions with experienced educators which will grow into a professional support network of Black Male educators in the Capital District.
