Description of Supplementary Educational Programs
The following supplementary education programs are designed to serve the community while providing opportunities for Black educators to train and mentor TBT fellows and expose students to the teaching profession through practical part time work experience.
Liberation Literacy Academy is a free summer literacy program for students in grades 1st through 3rd grade. It runs each summer for 4 weeks. Students will receive a diagnostic reading assessment and receive culturally relevant reading instruction. The program is designed to produce reading gains for children while exposing them to Black authors, literature, books and culturally affirming content. Children will be instructed by veteran Black teachers, TBT fellows and high school and college age students serving as apprentice and assistant teachers. All teachers will receive training in culturally responsive pedagogy prior to the program.
Baobab Tutoring Services is a free after school tutoring program for students in grades 1st through 8th grade. The program is designed to support students with their classwork and homework in their current classes. The program runs during the school year, 4 days per week. The tutors will be TBT fellows, college age students and high school students with an interest in teaching as a profession.
Sankofa Saturday Shule & Communiversity is a free Saturday cultural enrichment program designed to teach students African and African American history and culture and instill racial and cultural pride. Emphasis will be placed on the vast contributions of people of African descent throughout world history. Students will be taught from an African centered perspective in order to gain a critical understanding of the African world view and the social, political, cultural and economic factors that have shaped the experience of African people throughout in the world.
